Malintzin's True Loyalty (week 8 blog)
As time progresses, we can notice the different treatment that the Spaniards were now getting from the Natives. The relationship that had been formed through mutual trade and communication had eventually ended; turning Natives and Spaniards officially against one another. It has been stated that during communication between Natives and Malintzin, Malintzin was not always accompanied by the Spaniards or Cortes (Pg. 106). This demonstrates the trust that Cortes and his men had for Malintzin but also meant that Malintzin had or was capable of developing her own relationship with the Natives. In return Malintzin was able to inform the Natives that the Spaniards were a big deal and strong enough to defeat the Natives even with their greatest men in combat. Because Malintzin had information to bring to the Natives she was also in a sense able to help the Natives as well. In one perspective we can view this as Malintzin’s myths of a traitor, with no sense of loyalty. Although there was not enough information provided as into what specific conversations have been made; readers can still make assumptions that while Malinztin was able to aid the Spaniards she still had the Natives best interest as well. In another perspective it can be demonstrated as a way to persuade the Natives, showing her true commitment to the Spaniards. I am curious to know what you all may infer in regards to her conversations with the Natives without Cortes and the other Spaniards present.
